The Saco River Jazz Ensemble (SRJE) is a community big band swing/jazz band based in the towns of Hollis and Buxton, Maine. This band was incorporated as a 501 (c3) organization in February 2011, but has been in existence as a full band since mid-2009. The band members range in age from high school to senior adults.
The "Big Band Era" of the 1930's, 40's, and 50's remains unprecedented in its influence on American music. The Saco River Jazz Ensemble plays music from that era, featuring the bands of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, and many others. It is our pleasure to play and perform this style of music that so many people enjoy. The opportunities to listen to "live" big bands are increasingly rare these days, especially music from the "big band era". This is important music literature for all generations to enjoy and to appreciate.
Ever since our start in 2009, we have sensed a real importance to what we are doing. Seniors especially appreciate the music we play. We are also learning that our music is very therapeutic to those with Alzheimer's and other dementia diseases, to those with Parkinson's disease, and to those with certain brain traumas. Consequently, we dedicate a great deal of our playing time to help benefit those patients.
We do many private concerts for hospitals, nursing/rehabilitation centers, senior housing, and elder care facilities located in Southern Maine. Our schedule also includes as many public concerts as our schedule allows. The SRJE has performed public concerts at the "Standish Summer Spectacular", "Buxton Community Days", The "LaKermesse Festival" in Biddeford, the Saco River Grange Hall in Bar Mills, and the Schoolhouse Arts Center in Sebago Lake, Maine. Our library of music is flexible enough to accomodate many types of functions. We hope to have the opportunity to play for you in the near future, click Contact Info above to schedule public or private events.
We have a very ambitious vision, and we will need a lot of help from the community to make it happen. If you would like to help support our vision in any way, please contact us. We are a non-profit organization, and all donations, large and small, are welcome and fully tax-deductible.
